Short-Term Stay After Hospital Admission
Patients that have been admitted to a hospital for a minimum of three nights may have the option for a short-term stay in our center to receive 24-hour Nursing care and Physical, Occupational and Speech Therapy up to seven-days each week. Patients may also request a short-term Respite in-patient stay for periods of a few days to several months.

Patients that require a permanent in-patient stay may be admitted from the Hospital, Assisted Living Facility or Home after receiving an admission order from their primary physician.

[review] => My dad has been at Monroe Rehabilitation center for over a month now. I visit at least every other day. A few of the staff members stand out most often during my visits. These individuals go above and beyond their normal job duties. Heather, the wound nurse is exceptional. She gives my dad the attention he needs to be sure he is healing the way he should. She gives updates and clear explanations to my questions. If I have an unrelated question she does not know the answer to, she will go out of her way to find the answers. Heather always greets me with a smile. She is courteous and kind to me and my dad. She is definitely an asset to the rehab facility.

[review] => Do not send your family to this place if they can’t get out bed and to the bathroom and caring for themselves. My mom is here and after many days of the same thing I’ve about had enough. She’s having to sit in soiled diapers, push the call bell to go to the bathroom and after 30 min waits someone comes and she has soiled her diaper cause she can’t hold it that long. We’ve had issues since day 1 of mom going here. Was promised a “private room” in the rehab side. She’s in a semi private room with the regular population. They say they aren’t going to add anyone to the room. The food is cold when they bring it out and when they don’t eat what’s on the tray they will give a sandwich. My mom ate 3 pamento cheese sandwiches in 2 days. Lunch, dinner and lunch again. When I got there today. She was sitting again in a soiled diaper and had been for a long time. Light was on, I finally changed her, got her up and took the bed apart because it was spoiled as well. Mind you it was 10:30am at this time. After being there 30 mins someone finally come to change her but I had already taken care of it. We’ve filed many “grievance” with the place and nothing has changed. Also called tonight cause again. Sitting in soiled diaper for a long time. Call bell has been used and no one came for a long time. After me calling the lady goes into the room as I’m on the phone with my mom and says “yes she does this everyday” I’m assuming the nurse told her I had just called and was comparing about the situation. She’s been very rude to my mom since this happen. Do not send your family here. Also a older lady today was going down the hall asking for drink cause she didn’t have anything. She came into my moms room and I helped her find someone to ask for drink cause she was so thirsty. This place is crazy. I asked 2-3 days ago to speak to the head person left a message and still no call back. These people do not care about your family!! Also let’s not forget the fact she was supposed to get a bath Thursday and that never happen. So frustrating. She also missed 2 lung doctor appts due to not being taken there. Considering she has copd this should have been handled and been taken. Now she has to wait til April

[review] => We could not have chosen a better place for our mom to rehab after breaking her leg! Everyone here was so very kind and patient, they were very loving and these people genuinely love their jobs! The facility as a whole did everything possible to make us feel welcome. They consistently and gently interact with their residents as PEOPLE and not just patients. We have enjoyed visiting our mom every day and I have loved interacting with ALL of the staff, from the director, the social worker, the receptionists, the nurses, CNAs, and the therapists. They never treated mom as if she was a bother and they genuinely enjoyed serving her and taking good care of her. My mom enjoyed the food and all of the staff treated us as if we belonged there whenever we visited. We didn’t meet even one person who wasn’t friendly or kind. We highly recommend Monroe Rehabilitation Center. While we hope mom never HAS to come back, we know there is a safe and hospitable place to go if we ever need one.

[review] => Would not recommend this place. They have let my Mom sit there in her poop several times but, witnessed it first hand today. Mom had turned on her light to get out of bed she requires assistance to get up she needed the bathroom nurse came in turned off the light, mom ended up using the bathroom on herself turned the light back on to get assistance again nurse came back in my mom told her that she had pooped herself and needed to be cleaned up the nurse turned off the light again. Waited for about 10 minutes to see if she was coming back to help my mom she didn't so I went to the nurses station there was three of them sitting and one standing all just talking so I interrupted them and told them my mom has turned her light back on she had used the bathroom on herself because they never came to help her get up and she needs to be cleaned up now they acknowledged me with just a ok. Went back to her room and another nurse walked by and asked what did she want I said to be cleaned up she said she would go get someone finally about another 15 minutes later Nancy came in to clean her up... This is not acceptable they know she gets chronic UTIs they've let her go sepsis several times and required hospital stays.

[review] => If I could give zero stars I would. My mother was a resident there and has been transferred elsewhere, thank goodness! She was just removed and hospitalized due to negligence of the nurses at Monroe Rehab. She was found on the floor and not discovered for over an hour after her bed was raised (she’s a fall risk). Of course, she was blamed for raising the bed which wasn’t possible for her to do so with her limited range of motion! Her nose is fractured, and her body temp was so low machines had to assist in bringing her core back to the normal temperature range. She also had an undiagnosed UTI which has caused further damage to her kidneys! INEXCUSABLE!
The room she was placed in after a previous medical event was beyond disgusting, with dirty walls and her room-mates shoes filled with dried feces! The list of horrors goes on and on. Do not entrust these people with your loved ones!
*I would like to add that my mom never recovered from the last fall at Monroe, she passed away in July after a stay in the hospital and Hospice. Monroe Rehab is a horrible, horrible place!

[review] => My brother was placed there a couple of months ago after a massive stroke. Due to work and finances- I myself am a nurse- I was not able to get there; I am many states away. He was totally incapacitated and totally dependent on the (supposed) care at Monroe. My niece lives 8 hours away and has a family including a 3-year-old daughter who was undergoing chemo simultaneously as this was occurring so unable to be at his side at all times. When she was able to visit , she was very unsatisfied and concerned about his lack of care. She has been trying for several weeks to get him relocated to another facility, however, due to the lack of response and action by Monroe, this did not get to happen. The social worker needs to have her license revoked . The house doctor should have his license looked at. My brother was transported yesterday, very emaciated and dehydrated and found to have sepsis and is now on hospice. I fully intend to investigate this further. And why does this facility consistently respond to the terrible reviews by asking people to delete their review and respond privately to an email or call them? This place does not to be in operation.

[review] => Our experience was awful at Monroe Rehab. My father rarely got his meds on time. A nurse was watching Grey’s Anatomy while preparing meds for patients. My father was showing signs of UTI and a test was never done. Due to increased coughing and pain when coughed, I had them call EMS. He had a pulmonary embolism, pneumonia, and a UTI. We were told Monroe still had his room available. Our answer was a clear “No, I would never send him back there.” For two weeks the same dead bug stayed on the floor in the bathroom. We couldn’t be happier with the services at our new facility. PT/OT are awesome and daddy is doing amazing. Be an advocate for your family members!

[review] => Monroe Rehab is helping my mother recover from breaking her hip. They have been kind and responsive in the nine months she has been there. With their support she is getting close to being able to move to a less intensive (AKA not skilled nursing) facility.
A special shout-out to the physical and occupational therapists. They have pushed my Mom when needed and advocated for her throughout.
She has been in four other facilities since breaking the hip and it is here that she has been most comfortable. I'm grateful for the care she has received at Monroe Rehab.

[review] => There are probably some highly dedicated staff persons there. In fact, while I was leaving I stopped in the hallway to look up grocery store hours on my phone and an aide who thought I was taking photos reprimanded me. It isn't what I was doing but it represented commendable patient concern IMO. Nevertheless, the place is a snake pit. The building is thick with the stench of urine. Communication among professionals is deplorable. My husband is a Viet Nam 'conflict' Agent Orange exposure victim who is in end stage renal failure. Some Atrium hospital employees including a particularly childish RN and a grossly misinformed discharge planner bullied my husband into going to this place after I had made 24/7 care arrangements for him at home. He was told that going to this place was the only way he'd receive dialysis. On his 1st day there, they forgot to get him to dialysis. My concern was immediately and thoroughly addressed by an RN but it could have been too late. The best option would be for me to sit there with my husband all the time. But that stench!//
On the day after I wrote the above review I went to my husband's room and found him in an almost comatose state. Both his blood sugar level and his temperature were dangerously low. NO ONE HAD NOTICED! Thank g-d I came by.
No one knew who the nurse was who I'd spoken to previously so I asked that documentation be checked. Blank stares. 'You DO document, don't you?' Blank stares. He has returned to the hospital by way of the ER and has been admitted.)
4/19/2024 IN ADDITION- WHY I HAVE NO INTENTION OF FOLLOWING UP ON THE OWNER'S SUGGESTION THAT I CALL - THE 2nd TIME MY HUSBAND MISSED DIALYSIS I repeatedly called the Monroe Rehab/Nursing Center and was told that no one could take my call since 'they' were in a meeting. It wasn't until I stated that I had contacted the STATE OF NC Nursing Home Complaint Office who had advised me to call once more and say my call was urgent that suddenly the meeting was over. Someone picked up the phone and asked 'how may I help you?' I gave her my name and about 2 sentences into how serious it was that my husband had now missed 2 dialysis treatments since arriving at Monroe Rehab, I said I found it difficult to believe that she didn't know why I was calling. I then listened to her seemingly prepared statement based largely on fabrication.
'PATIENT REFUSED TO GO TO DIALYSIS' was the claim. Why? Because he needed clothing and there was none. If this were true ( it wasn't. There was a neatly packed piece of luggage on the nightstand no more than 4 feet from the pillow on my husband's bed. It had clothing in it. I had shown it to a member of the staff when I brought it in the day before.) But let's pretend it wasn't there. Does no one on staff comprehend the dire importance of dialysis? Was there not a shred of extra clothing in the facility? Scrubs, perhaps? When's the last time you went to a public place wearing the inevitable, more convenient for staff, disposable diaper and a hospital gown with string thin ties for closure? I'm going to assume that there truly was a 6:30 AM phone call made to me so that I could do whatever was necessary to ensure my husband's arrival at dialysis. According to the Center's statement I did not answer the phone. And so that was it? 'PATIENT REFUSED TO GO TO DIALYSIS' and The Monroe Rehab Center is in the clear! What a stellar provider of services! What an asset to the community! So NO THANKS! I have no interest in speaking with you by phone and do not tell me I THINK I had a bad experience. I KNOW I did and my husband's experience was even worse than mine was.

From the moment I stepped inside , I was greeted with an inviting atmosphere. The staff members were not only professional but also exhibited genuine kindness and empathy. They took the time to get to know each resident personally, addressing their individual needs with attentiveness and respect. It was evident that the staff members formed meaningful connections with the residents, creating a sense of familiarity and trust.
The facility itself was well-maintained and designed with the comfort of the residents in mind. The rooms were clean, spacious, and tastefully decorated, providing a cozy and homely ambiance. The common areas were thoughtfully arranged to encourage social interaction and engagement among the residents, fostering a sense of community and companionship.

The dining area was pleasant, fostering a social atmosphere where residents could enjoy their meals together, fostering a sense of camaraderie and shared experiences. They also allow refrigerators in the rooms of the residents for any late night or regular snacking the residents may want to do.
Lastly, the communication and involvement of family members in the care process were exemplary. The staff maintained open lines of communication, providing regular updates and welcoming family members' input and feedback. This transparent and collaborative approach reassured families that their loved ones were receiving the best possible care.
In conclusion, I wholeheartedly recommend Monroe Rehabilitation Center to anyone seeking a nursing home that goes above and beyond in providing compassionate care. From the nurturing staff to the comfortable accommodations and engaging activities, every aspect of this nursing home is designed to enhance the quality of life for its residents. This is due to the great care and love he receives there from everyone everyday. There are too many people to name and tell what they have done for him and continue to do for him. Everyone is so good to him. Every department is great to work with. They are all so helpful and kind. I will give you just one example so you can see the love and care my brother receives. I do not live in NC. Joyce Hoskins sends me lots of pictures and videos of my brother. She sends me pictures of him doing walking therapy, playing bingo, and pictures from all the wonderful activities, parties and events they have for the residents. Not many centers would do something like that. They all make him feel loved. If my brother can’t be at home, I am glad that he is in Monroe Rehab. Thanks to Everyone!!

[review] => When I first got here I was very sad.I even cried because I wasn't home and I was here. But then the cna's here started encouraging me and taking good care of me.I had a fear of falling but they helped me overcome that.After a few weeks I started feeling better about being here. The staff are amazing. Therapy has been a struggle But then I started to motivate myself and now im able to transfer from my bed to my wheelchair with little help.And overall I'm starting to feel like myself again. [review] => My mom is a resident of Monroe Rehabilitation Center. The place is not much to look at because it's very old and broken down, and it needs to be remodeled. But the care given is a little more specialized because they don't have that many residents in a time right now where there's a lot of short-handedness. They are very good with their communication with the family. They let me know everything that's going on with her. They're very proactive and have reached out to me whenever there's been an issue or any kind of changes going on. I have gotten more communication from that place than some of the top-rated places in Charlotte. I've had the best care so far here, which is why I'm comfortable with her remaining there for the time being.
The staff was friendly and most of them truly seemed to treat their elderly like they were a member of their own family. The other thing I have to rave about was, that she was in short term there up until insurance stopped paying. Now she's remaining there long-term, and they're paying out of pocket. When she was covered for rehab services, their general rehab was better than any place I've been to in the hospital or any other place. They were there every day, and they had people who were very concerned with everything they could give to get her occupational and physical therapy. She had it more often than any place that she was in. She had it religiously four times to five times a week. They told me they were going to give it, and that's exactly what they gave. I had people calling me, updating me when I couldn't be there to hear what they did. They were very good at keeping me up to date on the progress she was making when she was being rehabbed.
As far as rating them for their trauma, rehabilitation, and short-term, it's better than any place I've been to. I have seen what she's eaten though, and I know my mother is pretty particular. I would say the food is okay, definitely not the worst. She is pretty picky and has pretty good taste. I'm not saying it's great, but it's not terrible.

[review] => DO NOT LET YOUR LOVED ONE BE ADMITTED TO THIS UNSAFE, UNSANITARY FACILITY!!!! My husband suffered a massive stroke and was sent here (last option). I could not believe the horrendous odors when I first walked in the door. The rooms are small, they have heating/air units like hotel rooms. These units are absolutely disgusting if not properly cleaned and filters changed in a consistent manner. They carry harmful bacteria and toxins which transfer into the air.The one in his room had a dirty bandage stuck in it. The nursing staff was a joke. Very rude and mean. One of the nurses was so mean to a patient right in front of me. I was flabbergasted! My husband is tube fed currently and he was given no water for 2 days! His feeding tube was leaking and went all over him twice. I waited 20 minutes for a nurse to come clean him up and check out the situation and ended up having to find someone to help us find HIS nurse. The environment is noisy and disorganized. My husband requires a very calm, quiet environment due to his stroke. He was agitated and cried the whole time he was there; 2 days too long! TV's blaring in about every room, patients screaming out for help, the list of wrongs is endless. He had to be taken to the hospital after a little less than 48 hrs there and ended up that had double pneumonia! He arrived there in great condition, no cough, congestion, and making progress. Please advocate for your loved one and personally look over the facility you are considering FULLY. Read reviews but base your opinion of the place on what you personally see. Talk to the staff, ask questions and make all of your concerns and expectations known up-front. Don't leave your loved one alone for long periods of time. Check on them and know what is going on. Places like this need to be shut down. Report abuse and take a stand, PLEASE.

[review] => I recently had a family member in the facility. The first night they had a fantastic male CNA, very caring heart and seemed be be very attentive. However it smelled like urine every visit and their was no warmth or feeling of true concern for the patient other than this gentleman. My family member was continuously put in diapers which was degrading and laid in their own uri e and poop for quiet a while.. This happened. Often. Orders were not followed by the RN nurses from their doctor and causing serious problems when surgery was scheduled. I would not recommend this facility as it is sad the way you see patients being uncared for when you feel they should be. I do feel two of the admin staff seemed to care.. But this is unexceptble for providing the quality of life for those who are admitted into a facility to be cared for while family members are trying to work thinking their loved ones are cared for professionally by the staff members..

[review] => My father Archie was a alzheimer's unit resident. He really loved the facility. The staff is A+ and provided personal and group attention. Dad loved the trivia games and calling Bingo. Over time dads health failed and the nursing staff and hospice took great care of him again. The day he passed I walked in and found the caretakers holding his hand and talking to him. My sister and I took over and they gave us privacy. The pastor stopped in and prayed and sang a wonderful song for Dad. A few moments later he was in heaven. Staff, Facility, and true caring for residents can't be beat.

[review] => My father went here after his stroke and they were wonderful! The therapy department was excellenent. They really got my dad back to his old self and focused a lot on helping our family understand his condition and what we as a family could do to help him. The nursing department was wonderful they had the same nurses and aids who cared. I don't agree about the smell there was never an odor unless they were changing my dad. Its an older building but I wouldn't send my family now anywhere else. The other patients were very friendly and my dad started going to a lot of the activities it really helped keep his spirits up. This place was fantastic

[review] => Recently, I placed my Mother in this facility, I was so happy to have her there, the Admissions department was great, they were extremely helpful. It wasn't long after the admission process was over, I noticed strange happenings. The room was cleaned for days, my Mother's call light would ring for long periods of time before being answered. I found her soiled with her own feces and urine on many occasions. The Nursing staff was rude and seemed to care less about my concerns. My Mother's had no appetite and wasn't eating, the lady from the kitchen told me that if I don't like what that was being served to take my Mother home. I WOULD NOT ever recommend anyone taking someone they loved to this care facility, if that is what you call it. I spoke with my Mother's primary care doctor and he said that many of his patients have gone there for rehab and care and have had bad experiences.

The rehab team is by far the best ,you can really tell rhey care for their patients and their outcomes. The whole team there have got big hearts and it shows. While it is not new, it was clean and they were making improvements. I would recommend it for both short term rehab or long term care. They truelly have a lot of heart.

[review] => My mom had her rehab at Monroe Rehabilitation Center. The staff seemed to take care of all the patients. The therapist worked with all the patients. They provided entertainment just about every day. They had bingo, local talents came in and perform. Some of the college kids from the local colleges came in and do activities with the patients and play games with them. They provided transportations to doctor's appointments. They brought their food to their room, but they do had a small dining area.
It was an older facility. It could stand some renovations. The rooms were plain and they could upgrade some of their modern day technology. However, it was in a pretty good shape and they had kept their standard and sanitation with the health department.

[review] => I do not know where to start listing the issues i see at this place. I visited a friend's grandmother and was shocked at the building and furniture/equipment's age and condition. The hallway carpet alone gave me nightmares. Parts of the ceiling are bubbled. The room furnishing are old and overall very depressing. My friend mentioned that she hadn't seen anyone using gait belts when working with someone. I saw 2 poeple doing therapy in the hallway and while the pushed a wheelchair behind the person no gait belt was ever used. While i was there the nurse button was pressed for a bathroom need and after 20 minutes we just had to go find someone. Now the thing that bothered me the most was over hearing someone telling patient in another room 'why didn't you call one of us before you sh#t yourself.' I would never place a family member of mine in this facility

My dad has been at Monroe Rehabilitation center for over a month now. I visit at least every other day. A few of the staff members stand out most often during my visits. These individuals go above and beyond their normal job duties. Heather, the wound nurse is exceptional. She gives my dad the attention he needs to be sure he is healing the way he should. She gives updates and clear explanations to my questions. If I have an unrelated question she does not know the answer to, she will go out of her way to find the answers. Heather always greets me with a smile. She is courteous and kind to me and my dad. She is definitely an asset to the rehab facility.
